Who’s responsible for bringing pie to your Thanksgiving feast this year?! Two hands up from this gal right here!

No Thanksgiving is complete with an apple pie, am I right?! This holiday classic is always one of my favorite dishes and is what keeps me from that second serving of mashed potatoes. My aunt makes the most incredible apple pie, and this year, I’m giving it a swing. The stakes are high, so I’ve been experimenting with tons of different recipes, and have concluded that this Homemade Caramel Apple Pie is by far the gold medalist.

The cinnamon-spiced apples combined with the sweet caramel sauce…yuuu–ummmm! Bake up this holiday favorite, and your family and friends are sure to be talking about it for years to come!

Ingredients
  1. unbaked pie crusts
  2. 7 medium apples, cored, peeled, and thinly sliced
  3. 1/2 cup brown sugar
  4. 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  5. 2 teaspoons fresh lemon zest
  6. 3 tbs fresh lemon juice
  7. 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  8. 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  9. 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  10. 1 and 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  11. ½ cup caramel sauce
  12. egg wash: 1 egg beaten with 1 tbs milk
  13. coarse sugar for sprinkling on crust
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Press one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and place onto a large baking sheet.
  3. Place apple slices into large bowl. Add brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, flour, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Toss to combine.
  4. Pour apple mixture into prepared pie crust.
  5. Drizzle with 1/2 cup of caramel sauce.
  6. Place the second pie crust over the filling (in a lattice shape or simply cut slits to vent the steam). Press edges to seal.
  7. Brush the lattice top with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  8. Place the pie (on the baking sheet) in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Keeping the pie in the oven, turn the temperature down to 350°F and bake for another 45-50 minutes. The pie is done when the crust is golden-brown and a small knife inserted into the pie comes out relatively clean.
  9. Allow the pie to cool before serving. If you would like, drizzle the pie additional caramel sauce.
