The holidays are officially here and it’s time to spread some Christmas cheer! You know what that means! Time to trim the tree, decorate your home, shop ’til you drop, and bake some of your favorite holiday goodies while blasting those classic holiday tunes!

If you’re like me, with these high temps down here in Texas, it’s a bit trickier to get in the holiday groove. We are all used to the lack of snow in the South, but temperatures in the 80’s are of no help! So to help get me in the Christmas spirit this year, I have teamed up with my favorite holiday store Holiday Warehouse to create my own winter wonderland right here in Dallas!

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-4the-everyday-hostess-christmas-5

Follow this step-by-step tutorial, and you too can bring home the magic of Christmas and transform your Christmas tree into a magical winter wonderland.

  1. Select the Right Christmas Tree

The Christmas tree is the shining centerpiece of your home, so this step is key! In order to lay the foundation for your winter wonderland and create a wintery, snow dusted scene, consider investing in an artificial flocked or frosted tree this year.

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-3

Flocked trees are adorned with a heavy artificial snow, so you already have the illusion of a snowy wonderland and half your work is done! The needles on frosted trees are usually just spray painted white and they retain their flat shape. Both are great options, but if you want the full snowy look, I recommend a flocked tree. Holiday Warehouse up in Plano has a full selection of each type and can help you find the the tree that will perfectly bring your vision to life.

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-10

  1. Choose your Color Scheme

So we know that you want to create a winter wonderland, but what kind of style or formality do you want to create? Do you want a more romantic scene with only shades of white? Are you aiming for something a bit more glam by adding some metallic tones? Or, do you want something more playful by adding in an accent color?

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-6

Last year, we decorated our tree with champagne and gold ornaments and ribbon, but I was loving a festive burst of red to go with my wintery whites this time around!

  1. Hang the Christmas Tree Lights

If you bought an artificial flocked or frosted tree, chances are the lights are already strung; however, if your tree does not include them, this is the first step you will want to take in decorating your tree!

To continue with your theme, buy about 100 white lights for every vertical foot of your tree. Start at the bottom bough and move upwards. String the lights starting at the trunk and moving towards the tip of the branch and then back. Continue until you reach the top of the tree. Make sure that the lights are plugged in while you are wrapping the tree, so you can easily see if you missed any sections.

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-9

  1. Add the Ribbon or Garland

This is where you will bring out your color scheme and differentiate your winter wonderland. Garlands and ribbons add a beautiful pop of color and texture that gives some added appeal to your tree. If you are going for that romantic, pure white scheme, select two white ribbons with different textures. Or if you want to add a pop of color, select one white ribbon and one red or the color of your choosing.

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-19

Starting at the top of the tree, softly wrap your ribbon slowly around the tree, increasing the width as you move down. If you want to mix up the classic ribbon look, consider draping the ribbon in a vertical manner by starting at the top of the tree and creating bustles of about 1.5 feet in length moving towards the base of the tree.

Pro Tip: Christmas tree ribbon can be very pricey, so to help with the cost, consider using a budget friendly ribbon option on the interior of tree and using a more expensive one on the outer layers.

  1. Add the Picks and Stems

Christmas tree picks and stems are a great way to add a little volume to your tree as well as an extra pop of color. You can buy these florals already made or have your local holiday store make you one that matches your theme. Holiday Warehouse has an entire room of pick options that are perfect for this snowy wonderland theme!

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-11

I wanted to create a pick that married my wintery theme with the playful natural red tones, so I used a red berry pick, a snow covered pine cone and branch, and a crystal branch to create a pick that pulled my theme together perfectly.

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-13

You always want to decorate with odd numbers, so make sure that you have an odd number of picks for your tree. For my 7.5 foot tree, I used 7 picks in my tree. If your tree is a bit smaller, you may want to use just 5, but if it’s bigger, you may want 9-11 picks.

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-14

  1. Hang the Christmas Tree Ornaments

Now this is the fun part of the decorating process! Start by hanging the larger balls evenly throughout the tree, ensuring that you hang some closer to the trunk to create depth and dimension. Use a copper wire to secure them to the tree and place heavier balls towards the top of the tree and closer to the trunk so they are not knocked off by pets or passersby.

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-20

Once you have hung the larger balls and ornaments, fill in around them with medium- to small-sized balls and decorative ornaments. The decorative ornaments is where your tree can really shine and your can show off your personality. Consider ornaments that continue to pull in the winter wonderland vibe such as snow covered pine cones, snowy antlers, snowflakes, and icicles etc. I paired orbs with glittery, matted, and snowy looks to achieve a balance of glam and festiveness.

The Everyday Hostess Christmas

Make sure you step back and evaluate your work while you are decorating to ensure you aren’t missing any sections and that your favorite pieces are properly showcased!

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-30

  1. Add the Tree Topper

Finally, add your tree topper. There are such a beautiful variety of tree toppers including angels, stars, and bows; however, for this snowy wonderland, I love the idea of a simple bow on top, or some large snow covered antlers, or snowflakes! Huge thanks to Holiday Warehouse for making this fabulous bow for me!

  1. Decorate Around the Tree

Just because the tree is complete, doesn’t mean your work is done! The setting around the tree is almost just as important as the tree itself.

the-everyday-hostess-christmas

Start with a winter inspired Christmas tree skirt at the base of the tree such as a white fur lined skirt or even a white sheepskin rug if you have one laying around your house.

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-2

Place your presents at the base of the tree on top of your tree skirt with the larger gifts in the back and the smaller ones in the front. I recommend wrapping your presents in 3 to 4 different wrapping papers that match the color scheme of your tree. For example, if your tree is purely white and romantic, consider wrapping your presents in a selection of textured white papers. Or if you brought in that red color like I did, a selection of red and white papers is perfect.

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-15

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-7

Now for my favorite part! Additional winter wonderland decor! To really help create that magical snowy scene, bring in some white winter animals such as these stuffed deers that I brought in from Holiday Warehouse. Or perhaps you have a cute vintage toboggan or some frosted tree branches that would be perfect leaning up against the tree. This is a fun way to get creative and style your tree with some of your favorite winter creatures.

the-everyday-hostess-christmas-8

Now sit back, (turn on the A/C if you are here in Texas) dim the lights, and enjoy your perfect winter wonderland Christmas tree with your loved ones! Merry Christmas to all!

Last year we shared all of our favorite tips and tricks for hosting the perfect game watching party from the comfort of your home – but what if you want to take your party on the road with you and enjoy a game day tailgate?!

the-everyday-hostess-tailgate-50

Tailgates are always my favorite way to get in the spirit and enjoy a fun-filled day of football! But if you’re the host, they also come with a long list of to do’s and quite a bit more preparation. To help ease the stress a bit, we’ve put together the x’s and o’s of how to throw the perfect tailgate!

the-everyday-hostess-tailgating-checklist

  1. Arrival Time: Your arrival time will depend on how die hard your group is, but I have found that most fans start arriving around 3 hours before the game starts. Therefore, you should plan on getting to your tailgate spot around 4-5 hours before kick-off. That way, you will have plenty of time to set-up and cook before your friends start showing up.
  1. Supplies: Always keep a toolbox in the back of your car with tailgating essentials such as jumper cables, spatulas, bottle openers, tongs, extra silverware, flashlights, can openers, trash bags, paper towels, hand sanitizer, duct tape, etc. If you’re really serious, consider bringing a generator for your car and a grill! And don’t forget plenty of coolers to chill your food and beer.
  1. Food Prep: Prepare all ingredients the night before. This will make your day of prep and cooking much easier! For example, if you’re serving burgers, shape and pack the burger patties between sheets of wax paper and slice up the condiments and toppings in advance!

Now for the fun part! Decor and food!

  1. Setup: For the perfect display, convert the back of your car or truck bed into a DIY serving station for your guests! This will make your tailgate more interactive and will minimize the work for you. I love the idea of a hot dog or burger bar, so fellow fans can dress their dish however they prefer.the-everyday-hostess-tailgate-41-44
  1. Decor: Class up your tailgate with a few special touches! Consider adding a touchdown paper table runner as an easy way to spoof up your tables. Then add banners, flags, decorative napkins and straws, serving trays, and koozies in your team’s colors to create a game winning display! Check out our favorite festive details from our recent tailgate here!the-everyday-hostess-tailgate-27
  1. Food: When it comes to tailgating food, easy is the name of the game! I keep my menu to anything that can be made on a grill out of our trunk (burgers, hotdogs, and BBQ sliders) or anything that does not need to be heated or refrigerated for a long time (think chips, sliced veggies, dips, fruit kabobs, nachos, jalapeno poppers, puppy chow, seasoned popcorn, cupcakes, chocolate covered pretzels, etc.).
  1. Drinks: Beer is an absolute staple at tailgates, but consider serving a signature cocktail in your school’s color as well! For a cute and easy decorative tip, I love adding washi tape to mason jars in the shape of football strings for each guest’s beverage.the-everyday-hostess-tailgate-5
  1. Seating: Don’t forget to pull out some foldable chairs so your guests have somewhere to relax and enjoy the company and game!

9. Most importantly! Introduce yourself to your neighbors, share a few drinks, and enjoy!

If you read our recent post on how to decorate small spaces, you know that I have been on a complete organizational roll lately! My small 700SF apartment, lacks much of the kitchen storage space that I was looking for (including a pantry!), so the kitchen has been under a complete organizational makeover! Today we are sharing 6 kitchen hacks that has completely transformed our kitchen in hopes it will inspire you as well! Enjoy!

1. Clear Containers – Clear containers are definitely an investment, but they are well worth it! You no longer have to sort through mountains of cereal boxes and bags of chips. Clear containers make the pantry feel more uniform and clean. These are perfect for storing cereal, sugar, pastas, flour, etc.

The Everyday Hostess Interior Design 14

2. Bins and Baskets – Invest in bins or baskets to help store more bulk items. I like to keep all my canned goods, baking items, and chip products in separate orderly bins. You can stack products on top of each other in the baskets, but they still appear more organized and systematic.

The Everyday Hostess Interior Design 16

3. Shelving Units – If your pantry doesn’t have many shelves, or if you don’t have a designated pantry space, consider adding a freestanding shelving unit to a hall closet to give yourself more storage space. This way you won’t have to waste valuable kitchen cabinet space with more canned food items rather than your favorite wine glasses! I have found Home Depot, Lowe’s, and the Container Store all sell great storage racks. I personally wanted to add a little extra color to my pantry, so I bought my turquoise one from the Container Store!

The Everyday Hostess Interior Design 12

4. Label Everything! – Labels bring a sense of order to your pantry as well as some personality! I absolutely LOVE these labels from Clementime Mercantile! She makes labels for any product you can imagine from sugar, and flour, to cleaning products or tools! Definitely check out her shop and if you don’t see the label you are looking for, she can customize one for you!

The Everyday Hostess Interior Design 13

5. Spice Jars – To keep your spice cabinet from getting too cluttered, invest in glass spice jars. This will also bring a sense of uniformity to your cabinet rather than having a million different brands and sizes of spice jars to your cabinet. I bought my spice jars from Bed Bath and Beyond and it has made a world of difference in my spice cabinet!

The Everyday Hostess Interior Design 32

6. Spice Jar Labels – When I say label everything, I mean everything! These gourmet spice labels from Itty Bitty Paper Co will completely transform your spice cabinet! They include 80 different herbs and spice labels plus two blank pages in case you have some unique spices.

The Everyday Hostess Interior Design 40

If you all read our recent post on how to decorate small spaces, you know that floor to ceiling drapes are the number one way to make a room appear larger and more spacious for your guests. Longer window treatments not only bring a sense of elegance and a finished look to a space, but they also draw your eye upward, which elongates the entire room. To me, these are crucial, especially if you like to entertain and want to add both functional and decorative elements to your home.

The Everyday Hostess Interior Design 37

Finding window panels at the store that fit your space and just graze the floor ever so perfectly can be incredibly tricky! When Landon and I were designing our home, we searched high and low for drapes that matched our style and were the exact length we needed. With little luck we decided to pursue custom made drapes, which are actually much more cost efficient and higher quality than store bought panels.

The Everyday Hostess Interior Design 39

We worked with Amanda at Avec Dieu Couture Home, who was an absolute delight and so incredibly helpful! She worked with us personally to find the exact pattern, size, and type of drapes that we needed. I sat down with her for a little Q&A to get a little bit better understanding of the importance of drapes as well as about her background and company.

The Everyday Hostess and IBB at Home Summer Soiree

As originally seen in IBB at Home.

Summer is officially here, so it’s time to dust off the patio furniture, bring out the lawn games, and prepare for your summer soirĂ©e! Whether you’re looking to host a formal seasonal dinner or casual pool party, these tips and tricks will help to ensure your summer gathering goes off without a hitch!

Choose a Theme – The theme will dictate every step of the party prep process, so it’s important to determine it early on. Do you want a laid back family pool party, formal summer dinner party, or even a backyard luau? The possibilities are endless! For my summer bash, I opted for a more casual picnic gathering with some close family and friends!

Guest List and InvitationsA well-done invitation gives your guests a glimpse of just how classy your summer soirĂ©e will be. It’s the first chance to sweep them off their feet, so make sure your invitations help portray the theme and experience you want to create. If your event is more casual and you want to send electronic invitations, I always love Paperless Post or Evite. To create a more formal atmosphere, send some good ol’ fashioned snail mail! Swoozies is one of my favorite custom invitation shops. I also love Etsy for predesigned printable invitations! Check out my friend Tara with PrintSmitten who designed this beautiful and festive invite for our summer soirĂ©e

The Everyday Hostess and IBB at Home Summer Soiree

Decor – Decorations turn a simple gathering into its own little world for your guests and set the ambiance and formality for the entire evening. Select a simple and bright color palette and incorporate it into all aspects of the decor. I am a firm believer that it’s all in the details, so be sure to add a few extra special touches to completely transform the party. For my backyard summer picnic, I went with a yellow, coral and aqua color palette, which helped create a light and airy atmosphere. The yellow picnic blanket with the decorative pillows, paper straws, gorgeous floral arrangements, and table settings all helped create a casual yet sophisticated summer soirĂ©e.

Menu – No gathering is complete without the perfect menu! Summer is all about highlighting fresh foods, so try and incorporate some seasonal ingredients. I always like to provide easy, servable and bite-sized dishes such as watermelon, my favorite Bacon Cheeseburger with Onion Ring Sliders, and chips and guacamole.

In addition to beer and wine, it’s nice to serve a signature cocktail such as a fruit sangria or margarita. Also be sure to provide a non-alcoholic drink such as a fresh lemonade. This Strawberry Moscato Lemonade is the perfect addition to your next gathering and the alcohol can easily be removed for all the kiddos!

Entertainment – It’s always fun to have an interactive element to a party to encourage mingling, especially if your guests don’t know each other that well. For a casual backyard party, I love the idea of lawn games like croquet or bocce ball. For those inspired by graphic design, cute scorecards could be added here! You could also set up a fire pit so people can make s’mores! Make sure to have a fun playlist going in the background to help set the mood for your party as well!

Finally, relax and enjoy your party! Don’t worry about cleaning while your guests are still there. That can wait until they leave! Have a cocktail or two and enjoy! You’ve worked hard!
